Description of Searcher of the South Wind

Searcher of the South Wind is based on photographs taken of an Arab stallion at a local horse show. The stallion, AL Firestorm, had been led out of the show arena and into the open air. As is standard, there was a south wind that day and Firestorm stopped to test the breezes.

I’ve painted horse portraits for years, almost always with the subject looking at me or at least facing me. So there was something immediately appealing about this oblique view of Firestorm. Add to that the long, tossing mane (one of my favorite things about drawing horses,) and I just had to draw it.

Besides, when you look at the steady gaze into the distance, don’t you wonder just what the horse is seeing or scenting?
