5"x7" Colored Pencil, unframed

Description of East of Camp Creek

One of my favorite places in the Flint Hills is the spot where a wandering gravel road called Camp Creek Road crosses Camp Creek by means of a ford. I’ve photographed that crossing from both sides and in many conditions many times, but have yet to find the composition that speaks to me.

However, I have photographed the scene on which East of Camp Creek is based. It has also been a boon to painting ideas, though most of them took the form of ACEOs (art trading cards.) This colored pencil drawing is the first larger piece, but it probably won’t be the last. There’s just something about the scene that calls to me. Perhaps it was the ever-present wind blowing through my hair and the smell and silence of wide open country when I took the photograph all those years ago.
