Description of August Morning in Kansas
Atmosphere is as much a part of any landscape art as the landscape itself. Part of what attracted me to this scene was the rows of trees and the distance they communicated to me.
But the haze of a hot August morning was also vital to communicating the distance that is so much a part of Kansas. I used sanded art paper to help convey that haze and produce on paper the vastness of the Kansas landscape.
August Morning in Kansas also proves that artists don’t always have to travel great distances to find inspiration. This scene is located just a mile or so south of Newton, Kansas on Old 81. Of course you have to be headed north toward Newton to see it, and even then, it’s easily missed. We passed it on countless trips to Wichita before it caught my eye.
