Description of A River Runs Through It

One of my favorite places to draw is the Flint Hills in Kansas. They’re a short drive from where I live and it’s very easy to spend an entire day wandering the back roads, taking in the sights.

There is something appealing about the starkness and shear distance visible from the highest points in that region, but it’s very difficult to capture in art. So I usually focus on the areas where rivers and ponds allow trees to grow and grass to flourish.

A River Runs Through It is one of an ongoing series of sketches in which I’m working out a composition for a future and larger piece. This is the best plan, so far.

And my personal favorite.

The paper is 146lb Bristol Vellum.

The pencil is Prismacolor Premier Terra Cotta, a great color for compositional landscape sketching.
